Let's take a minute to talk about your medication. This is Vivotif. It is a vaccine that helps to protect you from typhoid fever. Typhoid fever is a bacterial infection that usually spreads through contaminated food and water. It is highly contagious and can also be spread through close contact with someone who is infected. It is most common in countries where sanitation and clean water is limited. Vivotif is a vaccine that is taken by mouth. You should take it exactly as your doctor tells you to. The vaccine series contains 4 capsules that are often taken every other day. You should finish the capsules at least one week before traveling. Each dose should be taken at least one hour before a meal and with cold or luke-warm water. Swallow the capsules whole, and do not crush, chew, or open them. Make sure to store the capsules in the refrigerator before use and in between doses. Most people tolerate this medicine well. Common side effects include stomach pain, headache, fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or skin rash. These side effects are normal if they are mild and should go away. If these or other effects become reasons you want to stop taking this vaccine, please talk to your doctor or pharmacist. As with any medicine, rare but more serious side effects can occur. You should read the Patient Information Sheet to know which symptoms to watch for and when to report changes. Vivotif can interact with other medications. Before starting Vivotif, tell your healthcare provider about any medicine you are taking, including antibiotics, anti-malarial medications, and medications that suppress your immune system. It's also important to let your doctor know if you have an active fever, sudden stomach illness, or sudden intestinal illness. Women should check with their doctors before becoming pregnant and before breastfeeding. For best results, take Vivotif exactly as directed by your healthcare provider.
