Let's take a minute to talk about your medication. This is Focalin. You may hear it called by its generic name, dexmethylphenidate. It is often given one time each day, in the morning. You should take it exactly as prescribed by the doctor. You can take the dose with or without food. However, it may take longer to start working if you give it with food. Be sure to swallow the capsules whole. Never chew or crush them. Most people tolerate this medication well and it is considered safe when taken under a doctor's care. Still, you should wait until you know how Focalin affects you before doing things like driving a car or anything that requires attention. Common side effects can happen, like stomach upset, headaches, or loss of appetite. Others include irritability or problems sleeping. These are normal if they are mild and should go away.
