Let's take a minute to talk about your medication.

This is Focalin. You may hear it called by its generic name, dexmethylphenidate. This medicine helps to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD. Focalin is a stimulant medicine, but it calms people with ADHD so they can focus, work, and learn. 

Focalin is available in different forms. You were prescribed the extended release capsule. It is often given one time each day, in the morning. You should take it exactly as prescribed by the doctor. You can take the dose with or without food. However, it may take longer to start working if you give it with food. Be sure to swallow the capsules whole. Never chew or crush them. 

Most people tolerate this medication well and it is considered safe when taken under a doctor's care. Still, you should wait until you know how Focalin affects you before doing things like driving a car or anything that requires attention. Common side effects can happen, like stomach upset, headaches, or loss of appetite. Others include irritability or problems sleeping. These are normal if they are mild and should go away. If these or other side effects become reasons you want to stop taking this medicine, please talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

This medicine is controlled by federal law. It has a risk for addiction, abuse, misuse, overdose, and death. It can be dangerous to others, so store it in a safe place.
