Let's take a minute to talk about your medication.   This is TOBI. It helps to treat a certain type of chest infection in people with cystic fibrosis. It contains a type of antibiotic called an aminoglycoside. This treatment helps to fight the infection and make it easier to breath. TOBI is taken as a breathing treatment. The medicine will be placed into a nebulizer machine, which allows it to be breathed into the lungs. It is often used two times each day, about 12 hours apart. You should take it exactly as your doctor tells you to. When using the nebulizer, it is best to breathe normally. Each treatment usually lasts 15 minutes, and it is complete when no more mist is in the nebulizer chamber. TOBI must be used with special nebulizer and air compressor, so talk to your doctor about what supplies you need to get started. Also, you should read the 'Instructions for Use' for full information. If you still have questions, your doctor or pharmacist can help. Most people tolerate this medicine well. Common side effects include a cough, sore throat, rash, voice changes, and a change in the way food tastes. These effects are normal if they are mild and should go away. Some people also report coughing up blood and increased sputum. If these or other side effects become reasons you want to stop taking this medicine, please talk to your doctor or pharmacist. As with any medicine, rare but serious side effects could occur. With TOBI, this includes severe breathing and kidney problems. It can also cause muscle weakness and hearing loss. You should read the Patient Information Sheet to know which symptoms to watch for and when to report changes. To help keep this medicine safe for you, your doctor will follow your condition closely and may order blood and breathing tests.   TOBI can interact with other medicines. You should always check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking other medicines. TOBI is not safe for unborn babies. Women should check with their doctors before becoming pregnant and before breastfeeding. For best results, take TOBI only as prescribed, and ask your pharmacist or doctor if you have questions about your nebulizer.
