Let's take a minute to talk about your medication. This is Lamivudine and Zidovudine. You may hear it called by its brand name "Combivir." It can help keep HIV infection under control. Each tablet contains both medicines. Lamivudine and Zidovudine is often taken two times each day. You can your dose with or without food. You should take it exactly as your doctor tells you to. It is important not to miss doses. If you do, the virus could get worse and become harder to treat. Most people tolerate this medicine well. Common side effects include a headache, nausea, diarrhea, and tiredness. Some people may also have a runny or stuffy nose and a cough. These effects are normal if they are mild and should go away. If these or other side effects become reasons you want to stop taking this medicine, please talk to your doctor or pharmacist. As with any medication, rare but more serious side effects can occur. With Lamuvidine and Zidovudine, this includes problems with your muscles, liver, and pancreas. It can also cause changes to your immune system and blood cells. You should read the Patient Information Sheet to know which symptoms to watch for and when to report changes. To help keep this medicine safe for you, your doctor will follow your condition closely and will order blood tests.  This medicine could cause a flare up of hepatitis B if you already have it. To prevent this, you must not miss doses or stop taking it, unless your doctor says it is okay. Lamuvidine and Zidovudine can interact with other medicines. You should always check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking other medicines. While taking this medicine, you must still take precautions to prevent spreading HIV to others. Women should talk to their doctors before becoming pregnant and should not breastfeed. For best results with Lamivudine and Zidovudine, be sure to plan ahead for refills. Also, store it in the original bottle with the lid tightly sealed.
