Let's take a minute to talk about your medication. This is Xgeva. It has several uses. It can help reduce high levels of calcium in the blood, protect bones from damage from tumors, and treat giant cell tumor of bone. This same medicine also has the brand name 'Prolia'. Tell your doctor if you have ever taken Prolia, and do not take both. Your doctor will help you manage common side effects, like fatigue, nausea, weakness, or headache. These are normal if they are mild, and should go away. If these or other side effects become reasons you want to stop taking Xgeva, please talk to your doctor or pharmacist. As with any medicine, more serious side effects can occur. You should call your doctor right away if you notice any unusual changes to your body, such as new pain in your hip, groin or thigh. Xgeva can cause loss of bone in the jaw. Tell your doctor if you notice tooth or jaw problems or pain. Also, tell your dentist you take Xgeva, and keep your teeth healthy every day to reduce the need for dental work. Your doctor may check levels of calcium and phosphate in your blood. Low levels of calcium can lead to muscle twitches or cramps and should be reported to your doctor. You should take supplements for calcium, vitamin D and phosphate only if your doctor tells you to. Get help right away if you have symptoms of an allergic reaction, like a rash, shortness of breath, or swelling or tingling, especially in your mouth or throat. Xgeva is not safe for babies. Women must prevent pregnancy during treatment and for at least 5 months after treatment. For best results, ask your doctor about support resources that are available.
