Let's take a minute to talk about your medication. This is valacyclovir, and you should take it exactly as directed by your doctor. Valacyclovir treats cold sores, genital herpes, chicken pox and shingles. These infections are caused by herpes viruses. This medicine won't get rid of the virus in your body, but it will help the current infection. You should take this medicine as soon as the first symptom starts. This may be when the affected area tingles, itches or burns. There are other uses for valacyclovir, too, like controlling outbreaks of genital herpes. You should know that during certain times of the infection, the virus can spread to other people. You can ask your doctor or pharmacist about how to prevent this. This medicine is usually well-tolerated. Some side effects can occur, though, like a headache, stomach upset, dizziness or tiredness. These are normal if they are mild and should go away. If these or other side effects become reasons you want to stop taking this medicine, please talk to your doctor or pharmacist. As with any medicine, rare but serious side effects can occur. You should call your doctor right away if you notice unusual changes to your body, like a rash, confusion or irritability. To reduce side effects from this medicine, you should avoid getting dehydrated. So, drink adequate amounts of water and other drinks. For best results, read the 'Patient Information' leaflet for more information.
