Let's take a minute to talk about your medication.

This is temozolomide. You should take it as directed by your doctor at the same time each day. Most patients like to take it on an empty stomach or at bedtime to help reduce upset stomach.

The capsule must be swallowed whole with a full glass of water. Do not open, chew or get any of the capsule powder on you. Also, store it safely away from children and pets.

Temozolomide helps treat tumors in the brain.

Many patients will have side effects, like nausea and vomiting. Your doctor can advise you how to prevent and treat this. You could also feel tired or dizzy, so wait until you know how it affects you before doing activities that require you to be alert, like driving. It can also cause headache, constipation, loss of appetite, rash or hair loss. The good news is most side effects aren't serious.  You should still report them to your doctor promptly.

As with any medicine, more serious side effects can occur. These may include convulsions, infections, or other cancers. You should pay close attention to your body and let your doctor know right away if you notice any unusual changes. Because this medicine can affect your blood counts, your doctor will order lab work and follow you closely.

It's important to talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking herbal remedies or other medicines, even if they don't require a prescription.

This medicine can be unsafe for babies, so men and women taking temozolomide should use effective birth control. Also, women should not breastfeed.

For best results, make certain that you understand how to take your dose, and read the patient information guide for full information.
