Let's take a minute to talk about your medication.

This is sirolimus. You may hear it called by the brand name 'Rapamune'.

You should take this medicine exactly as directed. Sirolimus reduces the action of your immune system. This can help prevent organ rejection, or treat other conditions.

Your doctor will order blood tests to check drug levels. This will show if the amount of drug in your body is effective and safe. It's important to take every dose the same way--either always with food or always without food. You should not eat or drink anything that contains grapefruit. Also, always check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking other medicines.

Many patients will have side effects. Common side effects include a headache, diarrhea and pain in your stomach and joints. You could also feel weak or tired. Always tell your healthcare team if you notice these or other side effects. They will help manage them. They will also check your blood pressure and cholesterol to make sure they do not get high.

Sirolimus lowers your ability to fight infections. Tell your doctor right away if you think you have an infection, or if you have a fever, chills, cough, muscle aches, or cuts or sores that are warm, red or painful.

As with any medicine, rare but more serious side effects can occur. You should read the medication guide for full information. Sirolimus increases your risk of certain cancers, like lymphoma and skin cancer. Your doctor will follow you closely. You should wear sunscreen and limit your time in the sun.

Women should not breastfeed or become pregnant because sirolimus is not safe for babies.

For best results, don't miss any doses and plan ahead for refills.
