Let's take a minute to talk about your medication. This is Sandostatin LAR Depot. It is a 'Long-Acting Release' drug that is deposited into your muscle by injection and then released slowly into your body. One dose lasts about a month. Sandostatin contains 'octreotide' which blocks other hormones that are causing problems. For example, it blocks growth hormone to help manage acromegaly. Also, it can block digestive hormones to treat symptoms caused by certain tumors in the digestive tract, like flushing or diarrhea. It is normal to have some side effects. You might notice some brief pain or tenderness at the injection site. You might have nausea, abdominal pain or feel a little gassy. Some patients feel a little dizzy or tired. These effects are normal if they are mild, and should go away. If these or other side effects become reasons you want to stop Sandostatin, please talk to your doctor or pharmacist. Diarrhea has also been reported. If you are taking this medicine to treat watery diarrhea, you should call your doctor if it gets worse instead of better. Also call if diarrhea returns after being under control for awhile. As with any medicine, more serious side effects could occur. Sandostatin may affect your thyroid, heart, gall bladder, or blood sugar. To help keep this medicine safe for you, your doctor will order tests and follow you closely. For best results with Sandostatin, keep your scheduled appointments for doses and labs. Also, ask your doctor about support resources that are available.
