Let's take a minute to talk about your medication. This is Sandimmune. Sandimmune is a brand name medicine. It contains a generic medicine called 'cyclosporine'. It is given as an infusion into a vein. The IV infusion will be given over several hours and multiple times a day. Or, it can be given continuously. During the dose, your health care team will watch you closely for any reactions, like a rash, shortness of breath or low blood pressure. Be sure to tell your healthcare team right away if you feel anything unusual, like swelling or tingling in your throat. Most patients can start taking this medicine by mouth, instead of IV, when they are eating and drinking well. Sandimmune reduces the action of your immune system. This can help prevent organ rejection or treat other conditions. Your doctor will order blood tests to confirm that the level of drug in your body stays effective and safe. Common side effects include mild tremors, nausea or high blood pressure. Some patients notice acne, hair growth or thickening of gums. Tell your health care team if you notice these or other side effects. They will help manage them. As with any medicine, more serious side effects can occur. With Sandimmune, these include kidney or liver problems. It also increases your risk of getting infections or getting certain types of cancer, like lymphoma or skin cancer. To help keep this medicine safe for you, your doctor will follow you closely. You should tell your doctor right away if you notice any unusual changes to your body. Sandimmune may not be safe for babies, so women should talk to their doctors before becoming pregnant or breastfeeding. For best results, work closely with your health care team to learn more about taking this medicine long-term.
