Let's take a minute to talk about your medication. This is Sandimmune. You may hear it called by the generic name 'cyclosporine'. Sandimmune reduces the action of your immune system. This can help prevent organ rejection or treat other conditions. You should take this medicine exactly as directed. Your doctor will order blood tests to check drug levels. This will show if the amount of drug in your body is effective and safe. To help keep your levels stable, you should take every dose the same way -- either always with food or always without food. You should swallow the capsule whole, and do not puncture it. Do not eat or drink anything that contains grapefruit, and always check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking other medicines. Common side effects include mild tremors, nausea or high blood pressure. Some patients notice acne, hair growth or thickening of gums. Tell your health care team if you notice these or other side effects. Sandimmune lowers your ability to fight infections. Tell your doctor right away if you think you have an infection, or if you have a fever, chills, cough, muscle aches, or cuts or sores that are warm, red or painful. As with any medicine, more serious side effects can occur. With Sandimmune, these include kidney or liver problems. It also increases your risk of certain cancers, like lymphoma or skin cancer. Your doctor will follow you closely. Tell your doctor right away if you notice unusual changes to your body. You should wear sunscreen and limit your time in the sun. Sandimmune may not be safe for babies, so women should talk to their doctors before becoming pregnant or breastfeeding. For best results, don't miss doses and plan ahead for your refills.
