Let's take a minute to talk about your medication.

This is Risperidone. You may also hear it called by its brand name, Risperdal. It helps to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. It also treats irritability symptoms associated with Autistic Disorder, such as aggression and mood changes. Risperidone may have other uses, too.

You should take Risperidone exactly how your doctor tells you to. You can take your dose with or without food. Your healthcare team will work to determine the best dose for you and how long you should take it. Most people tolerate this medicine well. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, stomach pain, diarrhea, and constipation. Some people have reported dry mouth, unusual muscle movements, and cold and flu-like symptoms. You could also feel tired, dizzy, anxious, or have blurred vision. You should wait until you know how it affects you before doing activities that require you to be alert, like driving. If these or other side effects become reasons you want to stop taking this medication, please talk to your healthcare team. You should not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor says it's okay. 
As with any medicine, rare but more serious side effects can occur. With Risperidone, this includes metabolic problems, involuntary muscle movements, an increased risk of seizures, and changes to your blood work. You should read the "patient information sheet" to know which symptoms to watch for and when to report changes. To help keep this medicine safe for you, your doctor will follow your condition closely and may order blood tests. 

Risperidone can interact with other medicines. You should always check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking any other medicines, herbal remedies, and vitamins. Also, do not drink alcohol. 

Women should talk to their doctors before becoming pregnant and before breastfeeding while taking this medication.

For best results with Risperidone, take exactly as prescribed. It can take several weeks to fully work. Tell your doctor if your condition does not improve or if it gets worse instead of better.
