Let's take a minute to talk about your medication. This is ramipril. Ramipril is used to treat high blood pressure, which can reduce your risk of having a heart attack or stroke. It can also be used to treat heart failure, and is especially helpful after a heart attack. It is usually well-tolerated, but some side effects could occur. At first, or if your doctor increases your dose, it could make you dizzy. To reduce this, stand up slowly after you've been sitting or lying down. Ramipril can also cause mild headaches or tiredness. This is normal and should go away. In addition, some patients will get a dry cough. If these or other side effects become reasons you want to stop taking this medication, please talk to your doctor or pharmacist. A serious allergic reaction would be rare, but it could happen. So get immediate medical help if you notice swelling, especially in your face, lips, throat or tongue. You should also talk to your doctor or pharmacist first before taking any non-prescription pain medication or before using a salt-substitute that contains potassium. It is important to know this medicine should not be taken by pregnant women, and should not be taken by people who are dehydrated. So, drink adequate fluids, avoid prolonged sweating and tell your doctor if you have persistent or severe vomiting or diarrhea. For best results, continue taking ramipril, and follow your doctor's advice about diet, exercise and checking your own blood pressure.
