Let's take a minute to talk about your medication. This is Pulmozyme. It helps treat cystic fibrosis by keeping mucus thin and loose. This may help you breathe better and have fewer lung infections. Your doctor will prescribe other medicines, too. Pulmozyme is a liquid medicine. You will place it into a nebulizer and then inhale the mist. Your healthcare team will teach you how to use and maintain a nebulizer. You should read the 'Instructions for Use' which can be found inside the Pulmozyme carton. You should use this medicine exactly as instructed by your doctor, and at the same time each day. Pulmozyme is packaged in ampules that are made for one use only. When a dose is due, you should twist the tab off the ampule. Then, gently squeeze it until all of the medicine goes into the nebulizer cup. Remember to only use the medicine if it is clear and colorless, and never mix it with other medicines. Many patients will have side effects. Common side effects include changes to your voice, a sore throat, red and watery eyes, or a runny nose. Some patients may have mild chest pain, dizziness, and a rash or fever. These are normal if they are mild and short-lived. If they are severe or do not go away, you should call your doctor. If these or other side effects become reasons you want to stop taking Pulmozyme, please talk to your doctor or pharmacist. You should store the ampules in the refrigerator. It is important to keep them in the foil pouch so they will not be damaged by light. For best results with Pulmozyme, ask your doctor about patient support services that are available.
