Let's take a minute to talk about your medication. This is promethazine, and you should take it as directed by your doctor. Promethazine treats several conditions, but it is most frequently used to control nausea and vomiting. It starts working in about 20 minutes, and the effects last up to 6 hours. Most people will feel sleepy, so don't do activities that require you to be alert, like driving, until you know how it affects you. Or, you could feel dizzy, and standing slowly after sitting or lying down can reduce this. Also, your mouth may seem dry. These effects are normal and should go away. If these or other side effects become reasons you want to stop taking this medication, please talk to your doctor or pharmacist. To reduce side effects, avoid alcohol and other medications that also cause drowsiness. Also, avoid being in the sun for too long. Rarely, serious side effects can occur, so call your doctor immediately if you notice any unusual changes, like extreme sleepiness, muscle movements you can't control, blurry vision, or breathing that seems a lot slower than normal. This medication should not be used in patients under age 2. For best results, take promethazine only as directed, and work with your doctor to find the lowest dose that works for you.
