Let's take a minute to talk about your medication.

This is prednisone, and it is important to take it exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

Prednisone is a corticosteroid that treats many conditions by reducing swelling and inflammation.

Prednisone is usually well-tolerated, but side effects can occur. You could have trouble sleeping or an upset stomach, and taking it several hours before bedtime and with food can help. You may also have mild headaches or dizziness. If these or other side effects become reasons you want to stop taking this medicine, please talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

In rare cases, serious side effects can occur, so call your doctor right away if you notice any unusual changes, like severe mood swings, fever, vision problems, or rapid weight gain.

With prolonged use, your body might rely on prednisone, so don't suddenly stop taking it unless your doctor says it's okay. You can also have an increased risk of infection, so avoid exposure to illness, and tell your doctor if you are sick or have a wound that doesn't heal. Prednisone can affect blood sugar levels or blood pressure. So if you are a diabetic or have high blood pressure, it's a good idea to track your results and report any changes to your doctor. Children will likely have their growth monitored, too.

For best results, take prednisone as directed and avoid skipping doses.
