Let's take a minute to talk about your medication. This is piperacillin and tazobactam. You might also hear it called by its brand name 'Zosyn'. It is a powerful type of penicillin. Be sure to tell your doctor if you have an allergy to penicillin. This antibiotic treats a wide-range of infections caused by germs called bacteria. It does not treat infections caused by viruses, like the common cold. Doses are given as an infusion into a vein, usually in your arm. Patients usually tolerate it well and start feeling better soon. Some side effects can occur. If you notice any changes to your body, like nausea, headache, a rash, or problems sleeping, you should let your doctor know. You could also have either diarrhea or constipation. When taking any antibiotic, females should watch for a vaginal yeast infection and obtain treatment if it occurs. As with any medicine, rare but more serious side effects can occur. To help keep this medicine safe for you, your doctor will follow you closely. You should tell your doctor right away if you have a bowel movement that is watery and bloody, even if it happens two or more months after your last dose. For best results with piperacillin and tazobactam, you should finish the full course. Otherwise, the infection could return and become hard to treat.
