Let's take a minute to talk about your medication. This is a Novolog FlexTouch Pen. It contains NovoLog insulin U-100. 'U-100' means there are 100 units of insulin in every 1 milliliter. NovoLog helps keep blood sugar at healthy levels in patients with diabetes. Controlling diabetes can help prevent serious health problems. NovoLog treats spikes in blood sugar that happen after meals. After your dose, you need to eat a meal within 5 to 10 minutes. You should take it exactly as prescribed, and check your blood sugar as directed. You should feel confident with the training on the FlexTouch Pen. If you have questions, your doctor or pharmacist can help. Remember, never share insulin, pens, cartridges or needles with another person. Before each dose, always double-check that you have the correct insulin and strength. NovoLog can cause low blood sugar. Low blood sugar could make you feel shaky, irritable, lightheaded or sweaty. It could also affect your concentration and your reaction time. You should be aware of this before doing activities that require you to be alert, like driving. To reduce the risk of low blood sugar, tell your doctor if you are sick or stressed. Also, do not skip meals and do not over-exercise. Mild to moderate low blood sugar is treated by eating or drinking things that contain sugar. Examples include fruit juice, raisins, hard candies, or glucose tablets. It is a good idea to always carry these. Blood sugar that is very low or high may need emergency help. Make sure to discuss a plan with your doctor. You should refrigerate unopened FlexTouch Pens. But, an open pen that you are using can be kept at room temperature. Once you use a pen, you must throw it away after 28 days.
