Let's take a minute to talk about your medication. This is Nexavar. Nexavar is an anti-cancer medicine that helps treat certain types of liver, kidney, or thyroid cancer. You should take this medicine exactly as directed. You should take it without food. This means at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal. It is normal to have side effects, like feeling tired or having diarrhea. Some patients have nausea, stomach pain, a decrease in appetite, or weight loss. You may notice hair loss or need to get treatment for an infection. These side effects are normal if they are mild. If these or other side effects become reasons you want to stop taking Nexavar, please talk to your doctor or pharmacist. Nexavar can also increase your blood pressure. You can ask your doctor if you should check your blood pressure, and when to report high readings.  As with any medicine, serious side effects can occur. With Nexavar, these include bleeding, stomach pain, heart attack, and changes to the skin on your mouth, hands, feet, or elsewhere. You should let your doctor know right away if you notice these or other unusual changes to your body. To help keep this medicine safe for you, your doctor will follow you closely. You should talk to your doctor or pharmacist about all the medicines and herbal remedies you take. Nexavar can harm unborn babies. Women AND men who take Nexavar must talk to their doctors about preventing pregnancy, which birth control method to use, and for how long. Tell your doctor right away if you or your partner becomes pregnant. Also, women should not breastfeed. For best results, plan ahead for refills, and ask your doctor about educational and support programs that are available to you.
