Let's take a minute to talk about your medication. This is montelukast. Montelukast helps control shortness of breath and wheezing that can happen with asthma, exercise, and allergies. It cannot treat sudden shortness of breath, so it doesn't replace a quick-acting rescue inhaler, like albuterol. Montelukast is considered safe and is generally well-tolerated. Some patients may get a headache, mild stomach upset, or a runny nose. This is normal and should go away. But, if these or other side effects become reasons you want to stop taking this medication, please talk with your doctor or pharmacist. Your doctor will want to know if you get an ear, nose or throat infection, or fever and flu symptoms. And, if you notice behavior changes, like restlessness or irritability, tell the doctor right away. For best results, take montelukast regularly, and follow the lifestyle changes recommended by your doctor to help you breathe better.
