Let's take a minute to talk about your medication.

This is a MMR II vaccine. It protects against three serious diseases: measles, mumps and rubella. These diseases are caused by viruses. These viruses were very common before vaccines were available. If they occur, they can cause serious harm. Measles can even cause death.

The MMR II vaccine is given to children around the age of 1 and 5. Certain infants and adults may benefit from it, too.

This vaccine is given as a shot with a very small needle. It is usually given in the upper arm.

Most people tolerate MMR II well. Common side effects include a fever, mild rash, swollen glands in the face or neck, and a little pain or stiffness in the joints. These effects can occur up to a week or two after the dose. They are normal if they are mild, and should go away. Rare effects include a seizure, which can cause jerking or staring, or a temporary bleeding disorder. If you are concerned about these or other effects, please talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

As with any vaccine, very rare but more serious side effects could occur, like an allergic reaction. Signs can include hives, swelling in the face and throat, problems breathing, dizziness or weakness. Get medical help right away if you notice these or any changes that concern you, like a very high fever or unusual behavior.

For best results with this vaccine, be sure to get the doses when they are due. Also be sure to read the Vaccine Information Sheet for more information, and talk to your doctor if you have any concerns.
