Let's take a minute to talk about your medication. This is Methotrexate. It's a powerful medicine, and you'll need to take it exactly as directed. Before taking it, you should be sure you understand your dose instructions. Methotrexate treats severe Psoriasis, Rheumatoid Arthritis and certain cancers. It's normal for some side effects to occur. You could get an upset stomach, nausea or feel tired. You could also bruise easily. Some patients may notice hair loss. You should let your doctor know if you have any side effects. As with any medicine, more serious side effects can happen. The good news is most problems can be found by medical tests before they become serious. So, be sure to follow your doctor's orders for lab tests and checkups. You should stop taking methotrexate and call your doctor right away if you get diarrhea, mouth sores, a fever, cough, or shortness of breath. You should also stop taking it and call your doctor right away if you have bleeding, a skin rash, or any signs of an infection. You can help reduce side effects. You should check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking any new medicines or vaccines. You also need to avoid alcohol. It's important to drink ample amounts of fluids to avoid dehydration. Dehydration can happen when you sweat a lot with exercise and don't drink enough fluids. It can also happen from vomiting or diarrhea. If you think you are dehydrated, call your doctor right away for further instructions. Methotrexate can be harmful to unborn babies. Both women AND men must use effective birth control while taking methotrexate, and for a set amount of time after taking it. Also, women must not breastfeed.
