Let's take a minute to talk about your medication.  This is magnesium citrate. It is often used to relieve constipation that you might have once in a while. Sometimes, doctors prescribe it to clean out your bowel before a procedure. Magnesium citrate is a laxative. It causes your bowel to have more water than normal. This loosens the stool and causes a bowel movement. You should drink this medicine by mouth. It does have a strong taste. So, you may prefer to refrigerate it first, and drink it with ice cubes. After the dose, drink a full glass of water. You can expect to have a bowel movement about 30 minutes to 6 hours later. It is important to take this medicine as directed by the label, or as directed by your doctor. You should only give it to a child under 6 years old if instructed by their doctor. Common side effects include stomach cramps or diarrhea. These effects should go away after having a bowel movement. If these or other side effects worry you, please talk to your doctor or pharmacist. There are times that you should check with a doctor before using this medicine. Check first if you have stomach pain, nausea, vomiting or a change in bowel habits that lasts more than 1 week. Also, check first if you have kidney disease or if you have magnesium limits with your diet. Likewise, there are times you should stop using this medicine and check with a doctor. These include if you have rectal bleeding; if you need it for more than 1 week; or if you do not have a bowel movement. For best results, follow your doctor's advice about eating fiber, drinking fluids and exercising to help you stay regular.
