Let's take a minute to talk about your medication. This is Lupron Depot. This medicine mimics a hormone which is made naturally in the body. A few weeks after the first dose, Lupron Depot works to decrease other hormones in the body. For example, it can decrease estrogen levels to treat endometriosis, or it can decrease testosterone levels to treat prostate cancer. But, in the first few weeks after a dose, it may increase these hormones, which may lead to certain short-term side effects. Your doctor will tell you what side effects to expect that are temporary, and which may occur in the more long-term. Two common side effects are hot flashes and back aches. Sometimes, it causes a decrease in sex drive. You should talk to your doctor about these and any other changes to your body. Lupron is an injection, and it is commonly given into the upper arm, thigh, or buttock. Most patients will receive their dose at the doctor's office. After each dose, some mild tenderness or redness can occur at the injection site. You should call your doctor if this gets worse or does not go away. As with any medicine, more serious side effects could occur. With Lupron Depot, these can include possible convulsions, thinning bones, or impotence. Others include memory lapses, and mood changes or depression. To help keep this medicine safe for you, your doctor will follow you closely. This medicine is not safe for use during pregnancy. Women should talk to their doctors about birth control options and before becoming pregnant or breastfeeding. For best results with Lupron Depot, work closely with your doctor, and make sure you understand what the desired effects are.
