Let's take a minute to talk about your medication. This is linezolid. This antibiotic treats infections caused by germs called 'bacteria'. It does not treat infections caused by viruses, like the common cold. Before taking this medicine, be sure to tell your doctor if you have high blood pressure or a history of seizures. You can take each dose with or without food. While being treated with this medicine, though, there are foods you should not eat. You should not eat foods that are pickled, smoked or fermented. Examples are sauerkraut, soy sauce, dried meat, red wine and beer 'on tap'. These foods could cause side effects. Certain medicines can also cause serious side effects. You should check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking herbal remedies or other medicines, even if they don't require a prescription. Most patients tolerate linezolid well and start feeling better soon. Some side effects can occur, though, like a headache, nausea, or diarrhea. These are normal if they are mild and should go away. Linezolid can cause low blood sugar. Patients with diabetes should ask their doctors when to report low blood sugar readings. As with any medicine, rare but more serious side effects can occur. You should call your doctor right away if you notice unusual changes to your body, especially changes to your eyesight or a rash. Also, tell your doctor if you have diarrhea that is bloody or that lasts more than 2 days, even if it happens months after your last dose. To help keep this medicine safe for you, your doctor will follow you closely. For best results with linezolid, you should finish the full course. Otherwise, the infection could return and become hard to treat.
