Let's take a minute to talk about your medication.  This is a FlexTouch Pen and it contains Levemir U-100 insulin. U-100 means there are 100 units of insulin in every 1 milliliter. You should take it exactly as prescribed at the same time each day. Levemir helps keep blood sugar at healthy levels in patients with diabetes. Controlling diabetes can help postpone or prevent serious health problems. Levemir is a long-acting insulin. It stays at steady levels in your body throughout the day. It cannot treat blood sugar increases that happen after eating.  You need to feel confident with your training using the FlexTouch Pen. If you have questions, your doctor or pharmacist can help. Remember to always double-check that you have the right insulin and the right dose. Levemir can cause low blood sugar. This could make you feel shaky, irritable, lightheaded or sweaty. Low blood sugar could also affect your concentration and reaction time. You should be aware of this before doing activities that require you to be alert, like driving. You can help prevent low blood sugar by telling your doctor when you are sick or stressed. Also, do not skip meals and do not over-exercise.  Mild low blood sugar is treated by eating or drinking things that contain sugar. Some examples include fruit juice, raisins, hard candies, or glucose tablets. It is a good idea to always have these available. Severely low or high blood sugar may require emergency help. Make sure you discuss a plan with your doctor. You should store unopened Levemir FlexTouch Pens in the refrigerator. The pen you are using can be kept at room temperature. Once you use a pen, you must throw it away after 42 days. For best results, always know when to check your blood sugar and read the instructions that come with Levemir FlexTouch Pens.
