Let's take a minute to talk about your medication. This is Klor-Con M. It contains potassium chloride in a special 'extended-release' tablet. So, make sure you do not crush, chew or suck the tablet. If you ever have problems swallowing the tablet whole, ask your pharmacist for suggestions. You should take it as directed by your doctor. When a dose is due, you should take it with a meal and a full glass of water or other liquid. Potassium is used to prevent or treat low potassium levels. Normal potassium levels are necessary for your body to work correctly, especially your heart. Most patients tolerate potassium well. Still, some side effects can occur. You could have mild upset stomach, nausea or diarrhea. Taking it with food should help. But, if these or other side effects become reasons you want to stop taking this medication, please talk to your doctor or pharmacist. As with any medicine, more serious side effects could occur. You should call your doctor right away if you notice any unusual changes to your body. This includes stomach pain or stools that look like black tar. To help keep this medicine safe for you, your doctor will order blood tests. For best results, take Klor-Con M as directed, and plan ahead for refills.
