Let's take a minute to talk about your medication. This is Jardiance. It can also be referred to by its generic name Empagliflozin. It helps to control type 2 diabetes by lowering blood sugar. It does this by moving sugar from your body to your urine so you can get rid of it. It's also used to help patients with heart failure. It may have other uses, too. Over time, Jardiance may help protect you from problems with diabetes, like heart attacks, strokes, and damage to your eyes, nerves, and kidneys. You should take Jardiance exactly as your doctor tells you to. It is often taken once a day in the morning. You can take it with or without food. Most patients tolerate this medicine well. Common side effects include infections in the urinary tract and in the genital area and weight loss. Call your doctor if these occur. If these or other side effects become reasons you want to stop taking Jardiance, please talk to your doctor or pharmacist. As with any medicine, other serious side effects can occur. It is very important to read the Medication Guide for full information. It will tell you which symptoms to watch for and when to report them. Jardiance could cause kidney problems and dehydration. To help protect you from dehydration, you should ask your doctor how much fluid to drink each day. Jardiance could cause low blood sugar. This is more likely if you also take certain other diabetes medicines. To help avoid low blood sugar, you should tell your doctor when you have a fever, infection, trauma, surgery, or other stress. To help keep this medicine safe for you, your doctor will follow your condition closely and order lab tests. You must make sure that you know when to check your own blood sugar levels and ketone levels. Jardiance is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Also, if you plan on having surgery while on this medicine, be sure to let you doctor know. For best results with Jardiance, be sure to follow the diet and exercise program that your doctor recommends.
