Let's take a minute to talk about your medication. This is HumaLOG, and there are 100 units in every 1 milliliter. You should take it as directed. Before using HumaLOG at home, you should show your health care provider your injection technique, so you feel confident doing it on your own. You should also know how to dispose of needles. If you have any questions, your doctor or pharmacist can help. HumaLOG is a fast-acting insulin that lowers blood sugar after eating. You should take your dose 15 minutes before a meal, or immediately after a meal, to avoid low blood sugar. If low blood sugar happens, you might feel shaky, irritable, lightheaded or sweaty, or you might not notice anything. So, check your blood sugar at your scheduled times. It's more likely to happen if you miss meals, exercise too much, or if you are sick. Low blood sugar is often treated with fruit juice, hard candies or glucose tablets, so you should always have these available. But, blood sugar that is very low, or very high, may require emergency help, so you should discuss a plan with your doctor. You should refrigerate unopened HumaLOG. Once you use it, you must throw it away in 28 days, even if there is insulin left. You can keep it at room temperature during those 28 days. For best results, continue taking HumaLOG, because healthy blood sugar levels can reduce your risk of a heart attack, stroke and other problems from diabetes.
