Let's take a minute to talk about your medication. 

This is fondaparinux, and it is given as an injection. Fondaparinux can help protect you from blood clots. You may need protection from blood clots if you have certain surgeries of the hip, knee or stomach area, or for other reasons. This medicine can also help treat blood clots that have already happened. 

Most people tolerate fondaparinux well, but side effects can occur. You may bruise or bleed a little easier than before. Sometimes, the injection site may get a small rash, or have a little bleeding or itching. These effects are normal if they are mild and should go away. If these or other side effects become reasons you want to stop taking this medicine, please talk to your doctor or pharmacist. 

As with any medicine, more serious side effects can occur. Your doctor will follow you closely and may order blood tests. You should tell your doctor right away if you have any unusual changes to your body, like numbness, tingling or weak muscles. Also, tell your doctor if you get dark spots under your skin, a rash, or unexplained bruising or bleeding. This includes nosebleeds, blood in your urine, or stools that are black and like tar. 

It is important to tell your doctor and pharmacist about all of the medicines you take, even if they do not require a prescription. You should not take aspirin or over-the-counter pain relievers, unless your doctor says it is okay. Also, tell your dentist you take fondaparinux before any dental work. 

People who weigh less than 110 pounds should not use this medicine after surgery.
