Let's take a minute to talk about your medication. This is Enbrel. It is used to treat different types of arthritis. It may have other uses, too. Enbrel is a medicine that blocks part of your immune system, called TNF, which causes unwanted inflammation in your body. It should be administered at the dose and frequency directed by your doctor. Before using Enbrel at home, you should demonstrate an injection to your healthcare provider so that you feel confident doing it on your own. Enbrel should be clear and colorless prior to injection. Be sure to dispose of needles correctly after use. Also, it is important to always rotate your injection sites. If you have any questions, your doctor or pharmacist can help. Enbrel should be stored in the refrigerator. Prior to injection, you will want to allow at least 30 minutes for it to reach room temperature. It is important to keep Enbrel in the original carton when it is not in use to protect it from light. With Enbrel, you may have injection site reactions such as swelling or redness. This is normal and should go away in a few days. Other common side effects include headaches or sinus infections. If these or other side effects become reasons you want to stop taking this medicine, please talk to your doctor or pharmacist. Less common, serious side effects can occur, so call your doctor right away if you notice unusual changes to your body, like bruising or bleeding, shortness of breath, or swelling of your face or lips. Enbrel may lower your ability to fight infections. You should avoid being around those who are ill and tell your doctor if you feel sick or have a fever.  In addition, Enbrel may increase your risk of a few types of cancer, so it's a good idea to check your body regularly, and tell your doctor if you find changes, like a sore that won't heal, or a lump in your neck, groin, or under your arms. You should also watch for night sweats or weight loss. For best results, work closely with your healthcare team to manage side effects and your condition, and read the medication guide for more information.
