Let's take a minute to talk about your medication. This is calcipotriene. It treats plaque psoriasis and scalp psoriasis. It reduces the redness, thickness and scaling of problem areas. It takes about two weeks to start working, but full effects take longer. Calcipotriene is often applied one or two times each day. You should use it exactly as your doctor tells you to. You should wash your hands with soap and water before and after each dose. If you are treating an area on your hand, take care to not wash the medicine off. Calcipotriene is available in many forms, such as a cream, an ointment, and as a solution for the scalp. If you use the solution, you should part your hair with a comb and remove scaly debris. Then, apply a small amount to the lesions only, and rub it in gently and completely. If you use the cream or ointment, you should apply a thin layer to the affected skin. Then, rub it in gently until the skin absorbs most of it. This medicine should only be used on skin that is outside of the body, and never on the eyes, mouth or vaginal area. Also, do not apply it to open skin, such as skin that was just shaved or that has cuts or scrapes. This medicine can make your skin sensitive to sunlight. You should limit your time in the sun. Most people tolerate this medicine well. At first, some patients notice mild skin irritation, itching, dryness, peeling or stinging. These effects are normal if they are mild and should go away. Be sure to tell your doctor if they persist, or if the area gets worse instead of better. For best results with calcipotriene, do not miss doses, and finish the full course of treatment.
