Let's take a minute to talk about your medication.

This is a bumetanide injection. You may hear it called by the brand name, Bumex. Bumetanide works to remove extra water from your body. This makes it useful in treating swelling from conditions like heart failure, liver disease, and kidney disease. Doses can be given as an injection into the muscle, or into a vein.

This medicine is usually well-tolerated, but some side effects can occur. It will make you urinate more often, starting shortly after a dose. This is normal. Also, it may make you have muscle cramps or feel a little dizzy. So, it's a good idea to ask for help before you stand up, until you know how it affects you. If these or other side effects become reasons you want to stop taking this medicine, please talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

Bumetanide can decrease electrolytes in your body, like potassium. Your doctor will order blood tests to watch for this. Also, your doctor may prescribe potassium if it is needed for your condition.

As with any medicine, more serious side effects can happen. You should pay close attention to your body and let your doctor know if you notice anything unusual. To help keep this medicine safe for you, your doctor will follow you closely. Be sure to tell your doctor about all of the other medicines you take, even if they don't require a prescription.

For best results with bumetanide, remember to stand up slowly, and follow your doctor's instructions for any diet or fluid orders.
