Let's take a minute to talk about your medication.  This is bisacodyl, and it is a laxative. You may also hear it called by a brand name like 'Dulcolax'. This medicine helps relieve constipation that you might have once in awhile. Sometimes, doctors prescribe this medicine to clean out your bowel before a procedure. You should take this medicine by mouth, and with a full glass of water. Be sure to swallow the tablet whole and do not crush, chew or cut it. You should not eat dairy products or take antacids in the hour before your dose. After a dose, you can expect a bowel movement in about 6 to 12 hours. You should take this medicine as directed on the label, or as directed by your doctor. You should only give this medicine to a child under the age of 2 if their doctor tells you to. This medicine causes the muscles in your bowel to be active. Common side effects can include stomach discomfort, cramps or faintness. These effects should go away after having a bowel movement. If these or other side effects worry you, please talk to your doctor or pharmacist. There are times that you should check with your doctor before using this medicine. Check first if you have stomach pain, nausea, vomiting or a change in bowel habits that lasts for more than 2 weeks. Likewise, there are times you should stop using this medicine and check with your doctor. These include if you have rectal bleeding; if you need it for more than 1 week; or if you do not have a bowel movement. For best results, follow your doctor's advice about eating fiber, drinking fluids and exercising to help you stay regular.
