Let's take a minute to talk about your medication.  This is a bisacodyl suppository. You may also hear it called by a brand name like 'Dulcolax'. This medicine helps relieve constipation that you might have once in a while. Sometimes, doctors prescribe this medicine to clean out the bowel before a procedure. This suppository is for rectal use only. To begin, remove it from the wrapper. Then, it should be inserted into the rectum with the pointed tip first. This medicine works best if it can remain inside the rectum for 15 to 20 minutes. It is important to use the suppository as directed on the label, or as directed by your doctor. You should only give this medicine to a child under the age of 12 if their doctor tells you to. Bisacodyl causes the muscles in your bowel to be active. Common side effects can include stomach discomfort, mild cramps, faintness or a burning feeling in the rectum. These effects should go away after the bowel movement. If these or other side effects worry you, please talk to your doctor or pharmacist. There are times that you should check with your doctor before using this medicine. Check first if you have stomach pain, nausea, vomiting or a change in bowel habits that lasts for more than 2 weeks. Likewise, there are times you should stop using this medicine and check with your doctor. These include if you have rectal bleeding; if you need it for more than 1 week; or if you do not have a bowel movement. For best results with a bisacodyl suppository, follow your doctor's advice about eating fiber, drinking fluids and exercising to help you stay regular.
