Let's take a minute to talk about your medication. This is Atrovent HFA. It helps relieve the symptoms of COPD, like coughing, chest tightness and shortness of breath. It cannot treat sudden breathing problems. Atrovent HFA is inhaled through the mouth and into the lungs. You should use it exactly as your doctor tells you to. You do not have to shake Atrovent HFA before using it, but you do need to 'prime' it before the first use. Priming is easy! To prime the inhaler, release 2 test sprays into the air, away from your face. You should repeat this anytime the inhaler has not been used in more than 3 days. It is important to read the 'Instructions for Use' to be sure you are comfortable using the Atrovent HFA inhaler. Most people tolerate this medicine well. Common side effects include a headache, a dry mouth and a bitter taste. These effects are normal if they are mild and should go away. If these or any other side effects become reasons you want to stop using this medicine, please talk to your doctor or pharmacist. You should wait until you know how it affects you before you do activities that require you to be alert, like driving. As with any medicine, more serious side effects could occur. With Atrovent HFA, these include an allergic reaction, dizziness, eye problems and difficulty urinating. It could also cause irritation or sores in the mouth or throat, an increased heart rate and sudden breathing problems. Let your doctor know right away if any of these occur. Drug interactions can occur. You should check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking other medicines. For best results with Atrovent HFA, you should track your symptoms. Remember to call your doctor right away if your breathing problems get worse.
