Let's take a minute to talk about your medication. This is alendronate. Alendronate can prevent and treat conditions that can make bones weak, like osteoporosis. It is important to take alendronate when you first wake up, and on an empty stomach with a full glass of water. For the first 30 minutes after taking the tablet, do not eat or drink anything except water, or the medication won't work. Also, do not recline or lie down, because it could irritate your throat. Thirty minutes after taking it, you can lie down, but only after you eat. It is generally well-tolerated, but some side effects can occur, like stomach upset, and constipation or diarrhea. This is normal and should go away. If these or other side effects become reasons you want to stop taking this medication, please talk to your doctor or pharmacist. You should tell your doctor if you notice any new bone pain, muscle pain or spasms, problems swallowing, heartburn, numbness or tingling, because they could be related to this medication. Also, many patients require extra calcium and vitamin D, so ask your doctor about your needs. For best results, continue taking it to strengthen your bones, take it on the same day each week, and follow your doctor's advice about diet and exercise.
